This sunday for Pancake Science, there will be science.
Phytoremediation is the process of using plants to remediate environmental
disasters rather than the more disruptive method of excavation. On sunday,
we’ll attempt to make our own paper implanted with seeds from plant species
that are known to be useful in phytoremediation.
- Pancakes start at 10pm ($5 suggested donation).
- The Science and making of the seed paper will start at 11pm.

Bioinformatics is the application of computer science to the field of
molecular biology. Or so wikipedia defines it. As a relitively new field that
definition is subject to change.
If you are interested in learning more about the exciting new field of
Bioinformatics and a few of its applications, ARC Research
Collaborative will be holding a brief introductory class
on June 2 @ 7pm.
At the start of the class you will be presented with a question. A biological
question that currently does not have an answer. In searching out that answer
you will be introduced to various bioinformatics methods and tools. Which will
include but not limited to…
- A brief history of molecular biology and bioinformatics
- Refresher of Molecular Biology
- Tour of some free primary sources
- Introduction to various useful databases
- How to build a (phylogenetic) tree.
- Sequence Analysis
- 3D Modeling
At the end of the class, it is my hope that you will leave with a deeper
understanding of what bioinformatics is and while you will probably leave with
more questions then you walked in with (as is wont to happen it seems in
science), you will have the tools to seek out the answers.
Laptops are not required, but may be of interest if you’d like to follow along.
Event registration for
Introduction to Bioinformatics
Starting this Friday we are going to be instating a thing called “5 minutes of
fame”, which is just a fancy way of saying Show & Tell, at every other open
To sign up, just fill out this form any time
before the event(time is limited, so sign up earlier).
For this Friday we have…
- Mantis: Explaining a problem in the current state of the live entertainment music scene and and my solution.
- Patrick: Relating the personal experience helping the city of Houston maintain their roads, pipes and general infrastructure through the power of 311.
- You: Whatever you’d like to share…
Wiki is live and ready
for you to start editing.
We have the back room well on its way to being a working lab and felt calling
it the DIYbioHouston Lab just wasn’t sexy. And DIY doesn’t really fit a lab
dedicated to sharing and community involvement. And so without further
verbage, I now present the new name, ARC Research Collaborative or
A.R.C for short.
Reminder: We have general meetings every thursday at 7pm-10pm so if you’re interested in anything tangentially related to biology stop on by.
If you are interested in doing or just learning a bit more about biology, stop
by Thursday from 7-9 for the weekly DIYbioHou meeting.
This week we will…
-Finish constructing lab benches
-Discuss the Edible Bacteria project
-Brainstorm what we want to do for SXSW
-Come up with a cool name for the lab
-Briefly discuss biosafety protocols
Contact Jacob if you have any questions.
Come join Tx/Rx members eat pancakes, talk science and donate what you can for
sweet sweet pancakes.
One of our goals as a group is help build a technology and science community.
In this effort we are hosting weekly pancakes.
When: Sunday @11am
