Houston is known as the energy capital of the world, the birthplace of Howard Hughes and the home of NASA’s Mission Control. But with the end of the shuttle program, the decline of American industry and the sad state of math and science education in the U.S., we worry for the future of our beloved Space City.

Here’s what we’re doing about it.

We are creating a climate for innovation in Houston.

We’ve built a nonprofit workshop, education center and startup incubator in the heart of Houston’s EaDo District. People from all walks of life come to TX/RX Labs to share their knowledge and make things together – inventions, art, software, music – you name it.

This culture of intellectual cross-pollination and self-organization has amazing benefits:

  • Our open and supportive space facilitates startups and jobs for Houston.
  • Our non-hierarchical structure attracts independent and capable entrepreneurs.
  • Our classes are the most affordable and diverse of any volunteer-run nonprofit in Houston.
  • Artists and designers have total creative freedom at TX/RX Labs.
  • People at the Lab work hard, and love what they do.

It’s time to expand.

In less than nine months, with an all-volunteer staff, TX/RX Labs trained nearly 200 Houstonians in such topics as algebra, welding, laboratory techniques, soldering, computer programming, 3D design, and ceramics, to name a few. Over the same period, our membership has grown by roughly 100%.

We need your help to expand to a new space, where we will be able to:

  • Educate 2,000 Houstonians each year.
  • Expand our curriculum with topics like business law, gardening and carpentry.
  • Accommodate school field trips and art exhibitions.
  • Build a renewable technology demonstration area.
  • Establish innovative new programs, like an interdisciplinary art residency.
  • Maintain  a vibrant community venue for performances and cultural events.

Here’s how you can help.

We have identified a new space in the heart of the EaDo District and are currently finalizing negotiations with our future landlord. But for us to succeed in this ambitious plan, we must raise approximately $30,000.00 to renovate our new home. The result will be a clean, safe and fun environment where people of all ages can come to learn, make and teach.

TX/RX Labs is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization. Donations to the Lab are tax-deductible, and we’ll be happy to provide you with documentation you may need to reflect your donation on your tax returns.

In addition to financial contributions, you can further the Lab’s mission by doing any of the following:

  • Make an in-kind donation of construction materials, tools or other equipment.
  • Donate your old car or boat.
  • Donate your services (printing, design, construction, painting, etc.)
  • Teach a course.
  • Become a member.
  • Tell your friends, family and co-workers about TX/RX Labs.

We are passionate about our mission and the projects we’re pursuing to accomplish it. Please join us for some home cooking at one of our open houses, which we hold every Friday night at 7:30 p.m., rain, shine or mosquitoes. We’ll leave the Tesla coil on for you.

Sincerely,

Patrick Wheeler

President, TX/RX Labs
